Larry James Thomas passed away on Tuesday May 3rd at 6:27 p.m. after experiencing a long- term illness. He loved and was deeply loved by his mother Lilly Thomas and he mourned her passing over the years. As a very young man Larry enlisted in the Navy serving with Squadron Four out of Jacksonville, Florida. He transferred to the Naval Reserve and received a medal for Good Conduct in 1966. Following his stint in the Navy, Larry began a career as an insurance agent with various companies, which lasted for many, many years. He was so popular and familiar around the Louisville community he was always known as "The Insurance Man." Everybody always knew who you meant when he was referred to in that way. His later years were spent as an employee for LG & E.
Larry dearly loved his U of L Cardinals (basketball) and was an avid fan of the team. He was also a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Even though they frustrated him frequently by season's end, he remained loyal. The truth is, he loved to watch football whenever it was on and whoever was playing.
His favorite old school vocalist was Sade. He listened to Sade up until his last days on earth. However, he did love old school doo-wop as well. Larry loved a good piece of chess or apple pie or a scoop of peach ice cream. He always said he looked forward to the summer when peach ice cream was in fashion. Larry was also a fan of comic books, something that began when he was a child and he still enjoyed them in his final years. His favorite character was Batman, followed by Superman. He didn't care too much for Marvel, but he did enjoy the films based upon the comic book heroes.
Sundays were very important to Larry because of his commitment to, and the community at Little Flock Baptist Church. He was a long-term member since 1950, and served as a trustee for numerous years. His connection to the church was something that he spoke of as being deep in his heart.
He is survived by his daughter, Renee´ Flemings (New York), son-in-law, Salvatore Carolei; wife Ethel Thomas (KY); stepdaughter, Vanessa L. whom he loved and raised as his own; grandchildren, Dimitri Dennard, Chris Duncan, DeAndre Lockhart and Kiara Lockhart; great grandchildren, Nehemiah McKinney, LaTaylia Sloan, Danni McKenzie, Kamyan Dennard, Alexandria Dennard, Armani Dennard, Kenyell Duncan, D'aria Lockhart and
