Carricato, Kimberly Leigh Hellems, 50, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012 at her home.
She was born on May 20, 1962 in Berkeley, California, to Sheila and Larry B. Hellems. Kimberly graduated from Atherton High School in 1980. She decided to pursue a career in art and attended the Louisville School of Art until its closure in 1983. Having an extreme fondness and talent for cooking, Kimberly then channeled her artistic skills and creativity to the kitchen, working for notable local establishments, including The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen and The Wiltshire Pantry, before opening her very own restaurant in downtown Louisville, A Matter of Taste Cafe, in the late eighties. Her exceptional skills as a chef also landed her top positions at many restaurants, including Casa Grisanti's, Silver Spoon Catering, and The Artemisia, among others. After her long and successful cooking career, Kimberly decided to pursue other interests. She attended Ivy Tech and then Spalding University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work degree in 2007, and was given the Field Practicum Student of the Year Award. She was also a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She was an avid collector of trinkets and curios, especially dolls, animal figurines, and all items which featured angels. Her passion for artistic expression never waned from her earlier days, as she frequently designed special arrangements of these objects to complement her home in ways that had deep personal and artistic meaning for her and her family. Kimberly was also a devoted animal lover who considered her pets as her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry B. Hellems and Sheila Hellems Aebersold.
She is survived by her husband Daniel R. Carricato, her brothers, Kevin B. Hellems (Regina) and Stephen T. Hellems, her niece Emily M. Hellems, her stepfather Stanley J. Aebersold, and her much beloved pets Belle, Freddie, Andy, and Fritter.
