Karyl Ferman

December 25, 1950 — October 8, 2024

Louisville

In cherished memory of Karyl Denise (Young) Ferman, a radiant light of love who illuminated this world from December 25th,1950 to October 8th, 2024. Karyl was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, whose joyous presence touched all those who knew her.

Born in Louisville, KY to Mrs. Ruth E. Young and Mr. Earl A. Young Jr., Karyl was the youngest of four children. She was raised in a close-knit family with the latter 3 siblings (all 3 born in less than 2 years) almost viewed as triplets. That bond remained throughout her life. Karyl was uniquely adventurous and aimed to explore the world beyond her city.

Upon graduation from Ahrens Trade School in 1968, Karyl attended Eastern Kentucky University. Karyl began to travel and lived many years in both California and New York City, where she was actively involved in modeling while simultaneously pursuing a career in art and design. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and education, she earned an undergraduate degree from The Parsons School of Design (New York) and continued her academic pursuit, achieving two master’s degrees from The New School of New York. During this period, Karyl also had the opportunity to model for Essence magazine and Fashion Fair cosmetics.

Karyl’s profound love for her daughter, Basha, and desire to raise her with family ties, prompted her to return to Louisville, Ky where she married Gordon “Steve” Ferman. As a family of faith, they became members of Green Castle Baptist Church where they were active until Steve’s passing in 2016. Karyl continued her faith walk by attending services with her sister and brother-in-law at Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Karyl was a dedicated community advocate. A former Adult Black Achiever, she professionally excelled as the Vice President of Development and Communications at Maryhurst, Inc. and before retiring, served as the Executive Director at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Her career was more than a job; it was her calling that encapsulated her spirit of service to others.

In her recent years, Karyl took delight in nature, and as a fitness enthusiast she enjoyed activities such as playing tennis, running marathons, cycling, and spending time with her daughter Basha, sister Cynthia, and caring for her 3 dogs.

Karyl’s earthly journey concluded on Tuesday, October 8th, 2024. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Knox Young; mother, Ruth E. Young; father, Earl A Young Jr; and husband Gordon “Steve” Ferman. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Basha Ferman; brother Earl A. Young III (Linda) of Woodbridge, Virginia; and sister Cynthia Mason (Lawrence) of Louisville, Ky.; nieces: Nicole Evans (Jason); L’Eugenia Smith (Justin); Shareen Young-Chavez (Jose) and nephews Dr. Lawrence E Mason Jr (Stephanie) and Earl A. Young IV along with 5 great-nieces, 5 great-nephews, and 1 great-great niece.

Karyl Ferman’s life was one of purpose, service and love. Her memory will forever be cherished by those blessed to have experienced her sense of humor, grace, and strength.
