Judith Phillips

January 7, 1944 — November 18, 2011

Judith Holland Phillips (née Jones), perfect wife of Dennis C. Phillips and perfect mother of Sarah E. Holland (David Carstairs) and David C. Phillips, 67, died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on November 18, 2011 at their home in Louisville, Kentucky. She passed away after a long struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease) during which she faced her diagnosis with grace, unwavering faith, character and a beautiful smile.

Judith (Judy) was born on January 7, 1944 in Paintsville, Kentucky and was the daughter of James Baxter and Martha Holland Jones (née Dixon). She attended the University of Louisville where she attained both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's Degree in English Literature and Writing.

She married Dennis C. Philips (Dennie) on April 15, 1967 and they raised one daughter and one son in a home filled with love.

Judy worked for the Jefferson County Public School system as an English teacher for more than 30 years and subsequently worked in a variety of roles in the Kentucky Department of Education in Frankfort. She was a lifelong member of the Jefferson Country Teachers Association. Latterly, she was also an Education Lecturer for the University of Louisville and Bellarmine University. Her entire working life was devoted to the education of the young and she was passionate about books, writing, education and the English language.

Judy was known by her family and friends to be generous, selfless and kind. Her Christian faith was the cornerstone of her attitude of kindness to all. Judy was an active member of the congregation of St Paul United Methodist Church for her entire adult life.

She is survived by her husband Dennis C. Phillips, her daughter Sarah Elizabeth Phillips Holland (husband David Carstairs), her son David Campbell Phillips, her mother Martha Holland Jones, her brother Jeremy Dixon Jones, her sister Joanne Miller Dobbins (née Jones) (Charles W. Dobbins Jr.), eight nieces and nephews, their spouses and children and a large extended family. They will all mourn her loss for the rest of their lives.

Judy will be interred at the St. Paul United Methodist Church Columbarium. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Douglass Blvd and Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky at 2:00 pm on December 3, 2011 . All who wish to pay their respects are warmly invited to attend. A reception will follow the memorial service. Any individual who wishes to make a contribution in her honor may do so to Hosparus of Louisville or St. Paul United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.newcomerlouisville.com.

And she shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
