The Honorable Algernon Wayne Tinsley, 75, of Huntington, W. Va., formerly of Louisville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 in Pinehurst, N.C., where his daughter resides. Tinsley was born in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a graduate of the University of Louisville where he received his bachelor's degree in physics and his Juris Doctorate. He was a former member of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville and an Air Force veteran. He retired as a federal judge in the West Virginia and Kentucky region and was a member of the Louisville, Kentucky and National Bar associations. In July 2013, he was inducted into the Kentucky Lawyers Hall of Fame. Tinsley was also on the board of the NAACP, loved karaoke and playing in a bridge club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Emma Howard Tinsley; brothers Gonzie and Howard Tinsley and his sister Deloris Brown.
Tinsley is survived by his children Algernon Tinsley II (Julia) and Monica Mitchell (Andre); grandchildren Brandon Mitchell, Nina Tinsley and Algernon Tinsley III; former wife and friend Barbara C. Tinsley; siblings Arlene, Luther, Solomon, Malcolm (Halima) and Everett (Denise) Tinsley; and a host of relatives and friends.
A celebration of Tinsley's life will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at Southeast Christian Church, 920 Blankenbaker Parkway with visitation in the Fireside Room at the church from 1 p.m. until time of service.
