Joseph William "Bill" Mattingly, age 83 of Louisville, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Bill graduated at the age of 16 from Campbellsburg High School and graduated from the University of Louisville with a Masters Degree. At age 20, he began his teaching career at Manual High School. He also taught at Atherton and Ballard High School, and was a Resource Teacher for Jefferson County Schools. Bill was a JCTA negotiator during the '70s union strike. He retired in 2000, after 38 years of service, but continued as an instructor for SAT and ACT at Jewish Vocational Center. He was a dedicated member of Drinking Liberally. He was a mentor for a Sudanese refugee. You could often find him playing cards in Indiana or fishing in Lake Okeechobee. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Adrian Mattingly and Mary Ellen Hughes Mattingly Fordice; siblings, Thomas Ray Mattingly, Charles "Chuck" Mattingly and Vanda Sue Mattingly.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carol; children, Stephen Ray Mattingly and Mary Kathleen Barnes (Nick); grandson, Oscar Daniel Barnes; siblings, Mary Benda (Dale), Joyce Brown, Lottie "Susie" Spheer, Kathy Albertson and Barbara Piatt; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243. A sharing of memories will begin at 7pm.
The family would like to thank the staff at Eastern Star for their loving care for Bill.
