Joseph Nolan Lavely, 92, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Joe was born in Louisville, Kentucky on August 27, 1929, the son of Earl Ray Lavely and Evelyn (Norris) Lavely. He moved to Cincinnati as a young child, living there to his mid-teens. He graduated from the Blessed Sacrament Parish School in 1944. Upon graduation, he returned to Louisville and began working with his father in home construction. Later, they began a painting contracting business known as E.R. Lavely & Son.
Joe loved travel adventures and in 1959, he traveled to Saltillo, Mexico. There he met his lifelong companion and future wife, Emma Cristina Rodriguez. They built a life and family together in Louisville.
Joe was an avid reader with a fierce intellectual curiosity. This was his lifelong passion. Of particular interest were the subjects of literature, philosophy, and Buddhism. He was also a self-taught fluent Spanish speaker. For a time, he collected rare coins and amassed quite a collection.
Joe is predeceased by his parents and a brother, Thomas Gerald Lavely. He is survived by his companion of 62 years, Emma Cristina Lavely; his daughter, Maria Lavely Rodriguez and husband Agustin; a son Eugene Lavely and wife Julia; two grandsons Philip and Christopher; a niece, Velvet Terry Lavely, and nephew, Paul T. Lavely.
