Joseph Barry Mcdermott

May 18, 1931 — February 28, 2013

McDermott, Joseph Barry Lt. Col. (retired) passed away Feb. 28th at the age of 81. He was born May 18, 1931 in Springfield, Pennsylvania, grew up in Ocean City, NJ and has been a resident of Louisville, KY since 1980. He graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University) as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a BA in Political Science in 1954, and from Webster College with a Master's Degree in Management in 1983. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry, and completed the Basic Officers, Airborne and Ranger Qualification Courses. During his 30 years of service he held positions as Company Commander with the 82nd Airborne Division; officer positions in intelligence, operations, training, and public affairs; Military Science professor; and advisor to the National Guard and Reserves. He served two combat tours in Vietnam, with other overseas tours in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium. Decorations include: Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force and Army Commendation Medals, Combat Infantry Badge, Senior Parachutist's Badge, and Ranger Tab.

When he retired in Louisville in 1984, he became a real estate broker starting his own firm "Mac Realty," and joined the Military Order of the World Wars and Retired Officers Association. He was a long-time member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, and in his retirement served as a lector and usher.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, with a quick wit, charming demeanor and winning smile. He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Marie McDermott; two children, identical twins Donna McDermott and Denys Schubert (Leo); three step-children Crystal Morris, Chris Morris (Mitzi) and Cary Morris (Christi); brother, Ronald McDermott; sisters, Joan Forry, Elaine Bunn and Susan Forester; 10 grandchildren including Petra and Patrick Schubert; 3 great-grandchildren and beloved 'granddog' Zoey.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 - 11:00 am Tueaday at St Margaret Mary Catholic Church (7813 Shelbyville Rd) followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 am. Burial with Military Funeral Honors will be held at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Radcliff, KY.
