Joseph Bernard "Bernie" Backert, age 76 of Louisville, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023. Bernie was born on July 6, 1947 in Louisville, the oldest of 9 children. He attended St. Francis of Rome and Trinity High School. He received an accounting degree from Bellarmine College. He was a retired CPA having worked as auditor for Deloitte and Touche and Crowe. After retirement he continued part-time accounting work first for Stage One Theater and then Springdale Presbyterian Church. He was a friend of Bill Wilson for 44 years. Bernie loved playing basketball and tennis, fishing, cars, and was passionate about trains and his HO scale model railroad. He had a colorful personality, frequently breaking out in song. Bernie never passed up a chance for fun and adventure having owned boats and a Vespa scooter. He took several train excursions exploring parts of the U.S, rode the Tail of Dragon in a Spyder, and would often hop in the car for short road-trips (always preferring to take the back roads). He loved traveling to Maggie Valley, NC to spend time in the mountains. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother (Jimmy Backert).
Bernie is survived by his wife Becky; daughters, Gina Lankswert (Pat), Janet Spencer (Jeff), and Ashley Kandle (Kirk); grandchildren, Hannah Rohr (Zach), Nicholas Lankswert, Lauren Spencer and Addison Spencer; siblings, Billy Backert (Betty), Anna Marie Carrico (Paul), Mike Backert (Jane), Dorothy Burch (Phil), Barbie Mattern (Steve), John Backert (Jann) and Mary Morison; his first wife, Jane Morgan; feline companions Bailey, Baxter and Figaro; and a host of friends and relatives.
The family expresses grateful appreciation to Baptist Health CBC, especially Dr. Huber, who cared for and treated Bernie the last 5 ½ years and the care providers of Hosparus Health.
Visitation will be 12pm to 2pm on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Springdale Presbyterian Church 7812 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40241, with a celebration of Bernie's life there at 2pm.
Memorial gifts may be made to Hosparus Health, Springdale Presbyterian Church or Bellarmine University.
