John Joseph Schutz, Jr., 94, passed away on January 1, 2013. A member of the nation's "Greatest Generation", he served our country proudly as a U.S. Marine communications chief in World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a 57-year congregant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany.
John was born on January 2, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late John J., Sr., and Therese M. (Wachenthaler) Schutz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ursula (Russell) Schutz and siblings, Marcella, Vernon, Clarance, and Albert Schutz.
He is survived by his four children, Sara Schutz, Jeanne Brashear (Amos), Ivar "Izzy" Zzyznius, and David Schutz (Linda); brother, Eugene Schutz (Betty); nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Doris and Margaret Schutz.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 PM Friday, January 4, 2013 and 9 to 11 AM on Saturday at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with a rosary recited at 4 PM on Friday. His Funeral Service will take place at 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home with burial to follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in New Albany.
