John Russell Small, Jr., age 93 of Louisville, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center, Hospice Unit in Louisville, KY. He was born on November 6, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late John Russell Small, Sr. and Mary Horschler. John grew up in Ohio and graduated from Wakeman High School, Wakeman, Ohio. After high school he enterred the Army/Air Corp as a Flight Engineer where he flew 44 missions over the Himalayas in the China-Burma-India theatre during World War II. He worked for Detroit Edison as a commercial artist for 36 years and retired in 1984. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife, Carol; his sons, John R. Small III and James Small; step-son, Jeffrey Guoin; sister, Jeanne Small; and his brother, Robert Small.
John is survived by his daughter, Jeri Tyree; stepson, Gary Guoin; grandchildren, Erik VanZant (Brittany) and Ashley Dietz (Stephen), Garrett Guoin (Torrey), Genevieve Guoin (Jon), Christopher Guoin, Michael Guoin, JJ Guoin; his great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Ricky; his sister, Marian Tseng; and a host of relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held from 4-8pm on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive in Middletown where the family will be greeting friends and relatives. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30th at 1pm at Newcomer, with burial to follow in Middletown Historic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Robley Rex VA Medical Center, Hospice Unit in Louisville, KY.
