He was predeceased by his father, John W. Garrett, in 1935, and his mother, Martha Stroxtile Garrett, in 2010. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy, and four children: John W. Garrett II (Cass Irvin), Laura Maddrill (David), Rebecca "Bek" Garrett (Tom Stilabower) and Robert A. Garrett: four grandchildren; Tasha Dolin, Erik C. Garrett, Daniel Garrett, and Garrett A. Maddrill; and two great-grandchildren. Other surviving family members include his sister-in-law, Victoria Chancellor Huffstutler (Chuck); cousins Sherrill "Junior" Semones (Carolyn) and Steve Semones; niece April Huffstutler Renno (Dale) and two great-nieces.
