GARRETT, John Calvin, 76, lost his battle with congestive heart failure on June 17, 2011, surrounded by family at home. He was a veteran of the Korean War, enlisting in the United States Navy at age 17. He attended Manual High School and later, Bellarmine College. After active duty he married his childhood sweetheart, Peggy M. Chancellor, and they settled in the South End of Louisville before moving to The Highlands, where they raised four children. John was a salesman and entrepreneur most of his life, a man with an engaging smile and zest for life.
He was predeceased by his father, John W. Garrett, in 1935, and his mother, Martha Stroxtile Garrett, in 2010. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy, and four children: John W. Garrett II (Cass Irvin), Laura Maddrill (David), Rebecca "Bek" Garrett (Tom Stilabower) and Robert A. Garrett: four grandchildren; Tasha Dolin, Erik C. Garrett, Daniel Garrett, and Garrett A. Maddrill; and two great-grandchildren. Other surviving family members include his sister-in-law, Victoria Chancellor Huffstutler (Chuck); cousins Sherrill "Junior" Semones (Carolyn) and Steve Semones; niece April Huffstutler Renno (Dale) and two great-nieces.
John was a member of the Highlands American Legion Post 201, the Masonic Fraternity, and was a Kentucky Colonel. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. A "Celebration of Life" will be held in the Veranda Room at Captain's Quarters Restaurant, 5700 Captains Quarters Rd., Harrods Creek, KY on Saturday, June 25, 2011 from six to nine p.m.
