John Owen Cozart, Sr.

John Owen "Johnny" Cozart, Sr., 67, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Racing was his life's passion and Johnny had become a well known fixture at both the Sportsdrome and Salem Speedways. Johnny was also an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed boating, camping and having cookouts with family and friends. 

He was born on June 15, 1957 in Salem, Indiana to Clifford Cozart and Phyllis (Gilstrap) Crawford. Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, Terry Cozart, Jr.; sister, Vicki Cozart; and brother-in-law, Mark Cecil.

Johnny is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Jolena (Criswell) Cozart; sons, John Jr. (Jenny), Terry (Nikki) Cozart; daughter, Kimberly (Kimmy) Cozart; 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bobbie Cecil, Barbara (Benny) Bolin; brothers, Mike (Betty), Danny (Penny), Randy (Rikki) Cozart, Jamie Crawford; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Monday after 9:00 a.m. His funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with cremation to follow according to Johnny's wish.
