Joe Staten

January 31, 1927 — November 28, 2024

Louisville, KY

Joe Staten, a beloved figure in the Louisville community, passed away on November 28, 2024 at the age of 97. Born on January 31, 1927, in Louisville, Kentucky, Joe was the cherished son of the late James and Mary (Frederick) Staten. He was raised in the Masonic Home alongside his siblings for 13 years and later graduated from Manual High School, class of 1948.

A dedicated member of the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, Joe's service laid the foundation for a life defined by commitment and camaraderie. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished 40-year career as a meter reader and foreman at LG&E, exemplifying hard work and dedication throughout his professional life.

Joe's kind, considerate nature and infectious sense of humor made him a dear friend to many. He had a remarkable talent for telling humorous stories about his life, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to hear them. Joe was known for his ability to connect with strangers, embodying a spirit of warmth and friendliness that endeared him to all.

An avid golfer well into his 90s, Joe spent countless joyful afternoons on the golf course. His love for sports extended to watching the University of Louisville and the Cincinnati Reds, both of which brought him great enjoyment. However, nothing compared to the time he cherished with his family, underscoring the importance of relationships in his life.

Joe’s contributions to the community extended far beyond his hobbies. He was a respected coach at St. Raphael for 16 years, where he guided young athletes to victory in several Toy Bowls. He further impacted young lives while coaching different sports at Louisville Country Day/Kentucky Country Day for 13 years. His dedication to high school sports culminated in his election to the Kentucky Football Officials Association Hall of Fame after a commendable 16-year tenure as a Kentucky High School Football Official.

He is survived by his loving children, Mike Staten (Judy), Marta Thomason (Mike), Greg "Shorty" Staten, Laurie Shields, Vickie Staten, and Jenny Brown (Ken), along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of love and laughter.

Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Margie (Hogan) Staten, and his seven siblings, who are surely welcoming him with open arms.

Visitation services will be held on December 5, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243). A private burial will be held at a later date.
