Family and friends were greatly valued as JoAnn held them close in her heart. She often said "I've got the best kids. You don't know if you've done a good job until they are grown." JoAnn loved telling jokes and stories and believed life was too short not to laugh which was an idea she instilled upon her crew of offsprings. Her second son, Scott, followed closely in her footsteps and became quite the accomplished prankster and teller of jokes himself.
JoAnn was a member of Summit Heights United Methodist Church until moving from Louisville Kentucky to Sellersburg Indiana to be near her daughters. She then joined Speed Memorial Church of Sellersburg where she became a member of the Women's Christian Fellowship which she enjoyed immensely. The congregation at Sellersburg church made her feel welcome and she made many new friends.
JoAnn was an avid quilter who shared her crafted items with many people along with sharing her quilting bug with her youngest daughter, Sandra. JoAnn was a member of the Hearts and Hands Quilting Guild and was involved with making coughing pillows for the patients at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville as well as participating with Project Linus Mission providing quilts to children in need.
JoAnn enjoyed participating and being a member of the Red Hats in Kentucky and Indiana, and the J-Walkers Square Dancing Club along with her husband, Whayne. She modeled for Women's World, enjoyed clothes and always wanted to be stylish.
After becoming a proficient piano player, JoAnn taught herself to play the organ. She enjoyed singing, which is something her daughter Pamela, also shared a joy for. Pamela belonged to the Kansas City Women's Choir which her mother was very proud of.
JoAnn's leadership of her three daughters' Girl Scout troops also inspired Pamela to become a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters' troops. As a parent of high school students, JoAnn supported Thomas Jefferson High School by volunteering to assist at the high school office, assisting with the marching band uniform fittings and volunteering her time to chaperone the high school marching band to the Mardi Gras Parade.
Her daughter Vicki, who just happened to be the oldest of her children, was the person who was by her side through the ups and downs as she aged. It was common for her to say "I'll get Vicki to take care of it. She knows what she's doing. If she tells you she'll take care of it she always does."
