Jo Ann Martin Harrigan Njie, was born in Shelbyville, KY on September 28, 1943. She was the daughter of Joe Henry and Lucy J. Martin. Jo Ann, or Jo Anna as she was known by her many friends, graduated from Lincoln Institute, Simpsonville, KY in 1961. She received her bachelor's degree from Wilberforce University in Wilberforce OH, in 1965. After living in Detroit, MI, and St. Thomas, Virgin Island, Jo Ann settled in Atlanta, Georgia. She lived in Atlanta until moving back to Kentucky in 2003. She resided in Louisville, KY until her death. Jo Ann practiced Nichiren Buddhism with the lay organization of Soka Gakkai International and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her father, the late Joe Henry Martin and her paternal grandparents, Henry and Aline Martin. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter, Kelly Harrigan Harrell (Travis); her mother, Lucy J. Martin; two grandchildren, Tyler and Elisabeth ; sisters, Elayne Morton, Bonita Sales (George), Sheree Wright (Anthony) and Paula Jordan; an aunt, Sue Ellis; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday at 4:00 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Dr., Louisville, with a gathering for family and friends prior to the service from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
