Jerry Lloyd Cox

March 12, 1941 — October 24, 2023

Jerry Cox, a cherished patriarch and distinguished servant of God, passed peacefully from this world on the evening of Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the age of 82. He was surrounded by the love and warmth of his family while an inpatient in the Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, KY. Jerry was born on March 12, 1941, a son of the late Lloyd and Lola Mae (Upchurch) Cox in Harrisburg, Ill. entering a world that he would leave significantly better than he found it. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters Marie Golish, Mary Lou Cook and her nephew Steve Burkel and a brother James Cox and his sister in law Sue Ellen Cox

Jerry was a man of incredible work ethic, dedicating his career to International Harvester, Navistar, and the Jefferson County, KY school board. He was a master of many trades, from carpentry to various other side jobs, and was always motivated by the welfare of his family.

Affectionately known as "Papaw" by his family, Jerry devoted his life to serving his church and his community. He and his loving wife, Betty, committed their energies to the homeless ministry, church bus service, Sunday school ministry, youth and children's camps, and other church services. A relentless prayer warrior, he fervently believed in the power of prayer and was tireless in his petitions for his church, family, and community. He was also a proud veteran having served in the United States Army. His deep-rooted faith and devotion to God left a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide his family.

Jerry is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Betty (Sondergeld) Cox; his son, Jerry Lloyd Cox and his wife Edie; daughters Kelly Rone and her husband Johnny and Robin Hayes and her husband Booney; grandchildren Brian Cox and his wife Emma, Jackson Cox and his significant other Alexis, Ali Rone, Lexi Rone and Gabriel Rone. His enduring love also extended to his brothers and sisters-in-law, whom he cherished as his own siblings and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Jerry's unique sense of humor and steadfast faith shaped him into an irreplaceable husband, father, and grandfather. His wise words, like "It will be alright when the swelling goes down" or "Keep the main thing the main thing," will echo in our hearts as we journey forward. As we honor Jerry's final advice to "Be happy," we will continue to love one another, pray for each other, and find our way home, guided by his enduring legacy.
