James T. Jones "Jim", 87, passed away November 29, 2014, at Baptist Hospital East.
He was born in Raywick, KY on May 30, 1927 to Butler and Julia Harris Jones. His family moved to Prospect, KY after losing their family farm during the Depression. He attended Ballard School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 16, serving from 1943 to 1946. He achieved the rank of Boatswain's Mate and saw combat in the Pacific Theater. He was one of the last men to leave the U.S.S. Ocelot (IX-110) and swim for shore when she sank during the typhoon of October 9, 1945. His medals included the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Jim was a retired realtor, builder and developer. He developed land, sold and built homes throughout Jefferson County and southern Indiana. He was instrumental in brokering the donation of land for the expansion of Baptist Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters: Lillian Hainsworth, Ethel Drury Barr, Regina Phillips, Virginia Lunsford and Cleda Mae Jones and by 4 brothers: Elmer, Joseph, Harold and Earl Jones, and his mother-in-law, Anna Sue England Cornette.
His is survived by his wife and best friend of 27 years, Virginia Jones, his daughter, Brenda G. Jones and son, John T. Jones of the home. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby (Virginia), father-in-law, John O. Cornette of Pikeville, KY, and sisters-in-law, Reta McKinney of Grand Blanc, MI, and Robin Cornette (Jim Penny) of Midway, KY and brother-in-law, Brian Cornette of Waco, KY. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his special furry friend, P.J.
Jim will be sadly missed by loving family and friends. We will miss his love, laughter, spirit and enthusiasm for life.
Jim was a member of Kosair Shrine Temple, 32nd Degree Mason, Harry R. Kendall Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, VFW Post 1170 in Middletown and John's Creek D.A.V. He was also a Lyndon Little League sponsor.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Broadway Baptist Church, 4000 Brownsboro Road, followed by private burial at Cave Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive, on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 from 2 until 8 p.m.
