James Kenneth Pope, age 84, loving father of three and adoring husband to wife, Mary Lee Pope was called to be with our Lord and Savior on the morning of Friday, August 19, 2022, with his son by his side. James died of natural causes. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1937, the youngest of 11 children, born to Peachie Marie Wilkerson and Robert Tucker Pope. He attended Valley High School and enrolled in the military shortly after. He met the love of his life, Mary Lee Pope, after he was discharged and they married in July 1, 1961. James and Mary Lee went on to raise three children, Scott, Julie and Troy. James was a brilliant carpenter who made his living building and remodeling. He enjoyed this career until his retirement. His hobbies included collecting model trains, anything University of Louisville and spending time with his family. James is preceded in death by his brothers, Bud, Bob, Bill, Tom, Estill and Clarence; and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth, Zena and Nancy.
James is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lee; his three children, Scott Pope (Kelly), Julie Pope Rodriguez (Miles) and Troy Pope (Erin); his grandchildren, Ashley and Dylan Pope, Austin Rodriguez, Jewell and Lyla Sullivan-Pope; and his sister, Charlene Akeridge (Jim).
Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm on Thursday, August 25th at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky, and from 9am to 11am on Friday, August 26th in the Fireside Room at Southeast Christian Church, 920 Blankenbaker Parkway, Louisville, KY 40243. A celebration of James' life will be at 11am in the Southeast Christian Church Chapel, with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
