James "Jimmy" Comstock Jr.

June 8, 1959 — February 25, 2025

Louisville

James Edward Comstock, Jr., of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on February 25, 2025 in his home with his wife and son by his side. Jim was born June 8, 1959 to James Edward Comstock, Sr. and Rosetta Pearl Comstock (Boling). He was the fourth of five children; older sister Kathy, twins Donna and Donnie, and younger brother John. Jim grew up in southwest Jefferson county, and many of his favorite stories to tell happened during the years the family lived on Bohannon Avenue in Valley Station. In his late teens and early twenties, Jim was often with his brother John, listening to the Bee Gees and The Cars while fixing up their 1967 Mustang Coupe and 1970 Mustang Fastback, respectively. After working jobs at the docks, Lowe’s, and a few restaurants, he was hired by a local upholsterer, Bill Ward. Jim was meticulous and learned quickly; he was especially interested- and excelled in- automotive upholstery such as vinyl tops, headliners, and seats. Jim’s precision and eye for detail made him a natural at his developing craft. In 1982, during a visit to his sister’s house, Jim was introduced to Benita Sue Lyvers, the twin sister of Kathy’s neighbor. Jim and Benita became inseparable, and they were married at the courthouse downtown on January 28, 1983. Two years later they welcomed their only child together, a son they named Joseph (Joey). Jim continued in upholstery work to make a living for his family. He often came home from a full day at Fitzsimmons Awnings, ate supper with his family, then spent hours in the garage working on other projects he had taken in on the side. Jim was skilled in all things upholstery, but custom fabrications for boat and hot rod interiors is where his talent was unparalleled; over the years, his craftsmanship was featured in a handful of national magazines and calendars. Jim and Benita worked hard to build a good life for their family of three; a few favorite memories are summer days at Holiday World, trips to the Smokey Mountains, and riding their bikes through the neighborhood. Jim enjoyed getting lost in a good book, Bluegrass pickin’ on the guitar, and building model cars. He was the best version of himself with Benita by his side; nothing brought him greater contentment than being with Joey, sitting on the deck he built himself, watching as a storm rumbles in the distance. He was a good man, and he will be missed by many.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and Rosie Comstock. He is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of forty-two years, Benita (Lyvers) Comstock; his son, Joey Comstock (Amanda); step-children Shaun Higdon (Krista) and Sheila Higdon; grandchildren Ava, Stella, Weston, and Liam Comstock; his siblings, Kathy Bruce (Duzzy), Donna Vogel (Roy), Donnie Comstock (Joyce), and John Comstock (Marie); dear friends Paul and Melanie Gantzer; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
