Irvin O. Spencer, 89, of Elizabeth, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. A U.S. Navy veteran, Irvin was retired from E.I. Dupont, Inc., in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a Harrison County Deputy Sheriff for 11 years was a licensed taxidermist and a past member of the Kentucky Colonels. Irvin was a 51-year member of the American Legion Post 379 where he served as Department Sergeant-of-Arms and the 1979-80 Eighth District Commander. A lifetime member of Corydon VFW Post 2950 and American Legion Bonnie Sloan Post 28, he also was a member of the 40/8 Club for 40 years.
Irvin was born on January 10, 1925 in Jeffersonville, Indiana to the late Odell and Hortense Spencer. He was also preceded in death by his stepson, Robert Norrington, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Edna L. (Green) Spencer; daughter, Sandy Kochert (Mike); three stepdaughters, Tina Glaze (Richard), Patty Arnold, and Julie Mills (Sam); one stepson, Rex Norrington; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 AM to 6 PM on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane New Albany, Indiana 47150). His Funeral Service will be at 11 AM on Monday followed by burial with military honors at Rose Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth
