Inez Wolfe, age 80, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away at home on Sunday, May 21, 2023.
Inez was born on March 14, 1943, in Tell City, Indiana, to the late Herbert Alfred Sturgeon and Velvalee Ball Sturgeon Brierly. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Inez was a member of the Floyd County Animal Rescue League (FCARL) and the Optimist Club and was involved with the Save Our Knobs group in Floyd County.
Inez dedicated her later life to the mission of TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) of the feline population to end the suffering of cats. She began trapping by volunteering with FCARL around 2006 and served on the League board. Over the course of nearly 20 years, Inez was responsible, both directly and indirectly, for the trapping and care of up to 5,000 cats, and she was recognized with the highest honors for her work. In addition to trapping, she also volunteered for the monthly Feline Fix "fixes" that was geared to helping low-income cat owners. Inez never said no to a request for assistance in controlling the feline population.
In response to hearing about Inez's death, another former "Feline Fixer," in describing Inez and her passion, said, "All we can do while we are here is try to make the world a better place in whatever way we can. Inez did that in her love and hard work for the kitties. She gave her best, her time, her resources, and her heart. Although we can't change everything, Inez would have if she could. She truly bloomed where she was planted." She was "CatMom."
Inez is survived by many close friends, who loved her; the entire feline rescue community, whom she considered as family; her house companions, canine, Fancy, felines, Beast, and Dovey, and many other cats in her care.
Cremation was chosen following Inez's wishes.
A Celebration of Life for Inez will be Sunday, June 11, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150).
Contributions in Inez's memory may be made to the New Albany/Floyd County Animal Shelter (215 W. Market St., New Albany, IN 47150) and the Floyd County Animal Rescue League (FCARL) (P.O. Box 241, New Albany, IN 47150). It was Inez's wish, instead of flowers, that her 21 "babies" be placed in good homes after her passing. Please inquire at FCARL if you can home just one of Inez's cats and/or volunteer to participate in FCARL's dedication to helping the companion animals of Floyd County.
