Herman F. Smith, a cherished father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on October 30 2024, at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 6, 1938, in New Albany, Indiana, Herman dedicated most of his life to his career at Paramount Plywood and Midwest Veneer, where he exemplified hard work and commitment. He also served proudly in the National Guard from 1955 to 1964.
Known for his kind spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand, Herman touched the lives of many. His personality was defined by compassion, and he had a unique talent for making those around him feel valued and cared for. Whether through his work or personal interactions, he consistently demonstrated a selflessness that endeared him to family and friends alike.
Herman had a wide array of interests that brought joy to his life. He found happiness in music, cherished moments spent fishing, and had a passion for classic cars. An avid supporter of IU Basketball, he always looked forward to the excitement of game days. Additionally, he enjoyed playing horseshoes and working outdoors, embracing the beauty of nature and the outdoors whenever possible. Family gatherings were particularly dear to him; they were a source of immense pride and joy, and he loved creating lasting memories with his loved ones.
His greatest pride, however, remained firmly rooted in his family. Herman is survived by his daughters, Kim Bell, Tami (Chris) Sprinkle, and Adraine M. Niehoff; sons, Troy F. (Cristy) Smith and Shane (Tylar) Smith. He was a doting grandfather to Lindsey, Nick (Allie), and Brendon, and he cherished every moment spent with his great granddaughter, Valerie with another great granddaughter on the way, Ruby. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde F. and M. Helena Smith, and his sister, Doris Dunn.
