Herman J. Bowe, Jr., 88, of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 6, 2016. Herman proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was a life member of St. Joseph Hill/St. John Paul II Catholic Church, and was a member of the Hobart Beach VFW #1693. He retired from GE after 36 years. He loved to be outside, tending to his garden and growing various vegetables, which won numerous Blue Ribbons at the Kentucky State Fair. He loved being with his family and also enjoyed traveling, watching baseball on TV, and playing cards.
Herman was born on August 30, 1928, in Sellersburg, Indiana, to the late Herman, Sr., and Christina (Zapp) Bowe. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lillie (Veteto) Bowe; sisters, Aileen Bowe and Rita (Bowe) Hettinger; nephew, Ronnie Hettinger; and niece, Carol Hettinger.
He is survived by his sister, Martha Bowe; brother, Carl Bowe; sister-in-law, Gladys (Veteto) Owen; and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks to caregiver, Barbara Webb, Sister Agnes, and all the nurses, staff, and CNA's at Providence Nursing Home. He will be missed by all his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday October 11, 2016, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Visitation will continue after 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday before his funeral. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Hill/St. John Paul II Catholic Church (2605 St. Joe Road West, Sellersburg), with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
