Herman N. "Herm" Hoffman, 78, of New Albany passed away on August 16, 2011 at the Robley Rex Veterans' Medical Center in Louisville. Herman was a Russian linguist for the U.S. Air Force Intelligence during the Korean War. He was also fluent in Spanish. After retiring from Frito Lay, he enjoyed working as a substitute teacher for the New Albany/Floyd County School Corporation. He was an accomplished poet with published works who authored the The Mem'ryville Collection. A member of Scottsville Christian Church and a gifted singer, he was the bass vocalist for the group, "The Gospel Sounds". He was an avid outdoorsman and played table tennis competitively.
Herman was born on May 5, 1933 in New Albany to the late William G. and Clara B. (Girdley) Hoffman. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Michael, John, and Thomas Hoffman and sisters, Wilma Berlin and Margaret Hays.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda F. (Smith) Hoffman; his daughter, Kara Lynne Hoffman Ricci; grandchildren, Serica and Joshua Ricci; great grandson, Malachi Ricci; and sisters, Dorothy Pyle and Regina Murphy.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 PM on Friday, August 19 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN 47150) and 10 AM to 12 PM on Saturday at the church. His Funeral Service will be at 12 PM on Saturday, August 20 at Scottsville Christian Church (7857 Scottsville Road, Floyds Knobs, IN 47119) followed by military honors and burial at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.
