Potter, Herman Edward
87, passed away surrounded by family on February 19, 2014. He was born in Louisville to the late George and Georgia Potter and was their last surviving child. Herman was a Navy veteran, went to the Speed School and was retired from Naval Ordnance Station.
Herman loved walking on the beach, golfing, country music and growing tomatoes to put in his infamous chili. He bowled in leagues for over 50 years till he became ill last summer. He loved his church, where he had been a deacon, sang in the choir, coached the softball team and taught his Sunday school class for 25 years. He loved when family gathered and Mary would cook fabulous meals.
Herman is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Mary Murphy Potter, whom he tenaciously cared for since her brain injury 3 years ago. He would sing to Mary every night, "have I told You Lately That I Love You". Herman leaves six children, Michael (Ellen), Greg (Cheri) of Indianapolis, Steve (Lesley) and David (Sherri) of Lexington, Marilyn (Steve) Leathers, and Linda (Larry) McCandless. Grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Leathers, Nick, Joe and Jessica Potter, Ben Potter and Reece Potter; Step-grandchildren, Emma & Jakob Ivey, Marsha Cloud & Susan Baldridge, Ashley & Brian Probus and Gail Deaton & Kim McCandless.
Cremation was chosen. A celebration of Herman's life will be held at 3 pm at the First Baptist Church in Middletown, 11721 Main St, 40243. Visitation will be at the church from 1-3.
