Herman Blank, 90, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, of Greenville, Indiana, died peacefully after a short illness on Friday, September 9, 2022. Herman was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Madeline (Boles) Blank; and his parents, Julius Blank and Lelia (Schoen) Blank.
A graduate of Lanesville High School, Herman served as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War and worked for more than 40 years at American Synthetic Rubber Company as a lab technician. For 22 years, he and Madeline lived and worked on a farm in Georgetown, where they raised their two daughters.
He was a founding member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and served as an elder and a trustee. For many years, he was a director of the Lanesville Heritage Weekend and enjoyed presenting demonstrations of the old machinery and farming techniques. As one of 11 children, Herman had a large extended family and enjoyed spending time with them, as well as his favorite hobbies of gardening, traveling, reading, wood working, and repairing things. He will be remembered as a gentle, kind man with a strong work ethic and a willingness to help others.
Herman is survived by his daughters, Ruth (Brian) Schmidt and Paula (John) Spugnardi; and four grandsons, Devin (Jennifer) Schmidt, Drew (Alexandra) Schmidt, Ryan (Morgan) Schmidt, and Philip Spugnardi; as well as six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Visitation will continue on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (5231 State Road 62, Georgetown, IN 47122). His Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church with burial to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Greenville, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
