George William Grut, 72, of Lanesville, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023. He was a United States Air Force veteran and retiree from Spectrum Cable. He was also a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America. George was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Pope John Paul II Council #1808, both in Lanesville.
He had several hobbies and interests that included woodworking, playing golf, snow skiing, spending time by the pool, and going for walks. George was an avid fan of horse racing and the Louisville Cardinals. He had served as a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and, with his family, had hosted several foreign exchange students. More than anything else, George loved spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, especially when he would take them on adventures.
He was born on October 7, 1950, in New Albany, Indiana, to George and Betty (O'Donahue) Grut. George is survived by his wife, Rita (Slaughter) Grut; children, Joseph "Richie" Grut and Rhonda Blanford; siblings, David "Kelly" Grut and Virginia "Ginger" Smith (Russ); grandchildren, Alexandrea "Allie" Grut, Savannah "Cheyenne" Troutman, Desirea "Koti" Troutman, Lilly Simmons, Amber "Nickey Mouse" Beebe (Ryan), John "JR" Grut, and Nathaniel "Nate" Grut; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 nieces; and 3 nephews.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Friday after 9:00 a.m. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church (2500 St. Mary's Drive NE, Lanesville) with burial and military honors to follow in the church cemetery.
