George Calvin Cheatham Sr., 96, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Wilma Jean Cheatham, and a daughter, Susan, who entered heaven before her birth. He was a Christian and member of the First Baptist Church of Fisherville. He was also a Member of the Fairdale Masonic Lodge.
George was born in Louisville, Kentucky to parents Marvin and Maggie Cheatham. He was the sixth of 12 children and is survived by brothers Daniel and Marvin Jr. He spent most of his youth growing up in Washington County, Kentucky along ‘Hog Run’ and attended New Hope Baptist Church and the old Maud School. George was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from January 1946 to November 1947 on the USS Deliver. He worked at the old Mingles Plant and retired as a Production Line Supervisor at General Electric’s Appliance Park, Building 5.
During his life, he enjoyed fishing and boating, was a formidable checker player and horseshoe pitcher. He was one of the four best Rook players to ever shuffle a deck. George and Jean’s all night Rook games with Katherine and H.J. were legendary among the family. Most of all he enjoyed his grandchildren, playing games and creating stories which were personalized for each one.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons Calvin (Sharon) and Steve (Cathy): grandchildren, Andrea Welch (Jay), Shannon Cheatham, Alison Phillips (Josh), Lindsey Rupe and Alex Cheatham; greatgrandchildren, Cameron Rupe, Boyce and Anna Phillips and Justin and Cora Welch.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - East Louisville, (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243).
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - East Louisville with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, KY.
