If heaven needed a cowboy, they got one the day Gene "Fotm" Moffatt arrived, Friday, September 14, 2012. Always a fan of John Wayne and Westerns, he loved riding a horse and kept his six-shooter close and loaded.
Though a cowboy at heart, he had many other passions. Gene wrote many songs, including (family Christmas favorite) "Randolph the Shiny Gun Cowboy" and published work "Thou Art the Christ." He was an author of four books, and was a Baptist minister for nearly 65 years, studying at Union University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His pastoring career included starting the prestigious Two Rivers church in Nashville, as well as working for the Sunday School Board and the Home Mission Board with the Southern Baptist Convention. Though retired as a reverend, he spent his last years ministering to those in need around him and online through a John Wayne chat room.
He was born Gene Edward Moffatt, March 18, 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee. Gene spent much of his childhood in and around the movie theater his father managed. Once, when his favorite film was playing ("Gone with the Wind"), he spent all day answering the phone, reporting the show times, at 10 years of age. He grew up to love film and television from both sides of the camera. He acted in episodes of "In the Heat of the Night," the film "Six Pack" with Kenny Rogers, and "Splendor in the Grass" with Natalie Wood and Robert Wagoner. Gene also worked as a still photographer on sets, and taught photography and modeling classes. He has since passed his passion for show biz on to his daughters and grandchildren.
Fotm, as his grandchildren know him, was an acronym he created, because he was too young to be called "Grandfather." He fathered three daughters, Martha Blevins (Donald), Mary Flowers and Marta Burk (Kevin) along with his wife Jeanne Arnold "Nonie" Moffatt. His three daughters then grew up to mother his seven grandchildren, Trey Blevins, Chad Blevins, Michelle Flowers, Tiffany Killinder(Matt), Emily Blevins, Morgan and Mallory Burk. So, thus, he created Father Of The Mothers, FOTM.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 19th at 1:00 p.m. in the Grove Hill Cemetery Chapel on Mt. Eden Road in Shelbyville, Ky. Donations can be given to the Kentucky Baptist Convention or Operation Care in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
