Gary "Pa" Prather, 77, of Garfield, Kentucky, departed this world on Sunday, April 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence brightened the lives of everyone he met. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was enthusiastically watching NASCAR, cheering for UK basketball, or indulging in a game of Candy Crush. One of his most treasured roles was as Santa Claus, spreading joy and warmth during Christmas parades at local churches, a testament to his caring spirit and deep affection for his community.
A proud veteran, Gary served in the United States Navy for two years. Gary began his professional career as a graphic designer at the Standard Gravure for many years until it closed. Gary retired as a Post Master from the United States Postal Service. Throughout his life, he embodied the spirit of selflessness, including spending his retirement to take his whole family to Disney World. He always put others before himself and deeply cared for the numerous foster children who crossed his path.
Born on December 2, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky, Gary was the son of Donald and Juanita (Martin) Prather. He is preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Wethington; step-daughter, Leslie Cooper; and granddaughter, Ella Ralph, all of whom he held dearly in his heart.
Gary leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor his memory: his devoted wife of 30 years, Rosemary Prather; his son, Michael Prather; daughters, Rebecca and Spring Prather; step-daughters, Angie Miller and Bobbi Jo (Ben) Bland; step-son, Jeff Cooper; as well as 13 grandchildren and two great-grandsons. His impact will also be felt by the many foster children who were fortunate to have him in their lives, alongside an extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 18, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel, with a Funeral Service beginning at 6:00 p.m. that same evening.
The family invites all to join them in celebrating Gary's wonderful life during an open house on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the farm—a fitting tribute to a man who loved life and those around him.
