Garry Allen Halsel

August 5, 1959 — July 3, 2024

Garry Allen Halsel was born on August 5, 1959 in Louisville, Kentucky to Roland Halsel and Elsie (Carver) Halsel. He was the third of four children.

Garry graduated from Westport High School in 1977. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. After three years, he returned to Kentucky and married his high school sweetheart, Rochelle Sickles. Garry had three daughters.

Garry always worked really hard to provide for his family. In his earlier years, he was an employee of Storer Cable Company, Philip Morris Corporation, and most recently, Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), from which he retired after more than twenty years of service. While at MSD, he served one term as the Union President for NAGE. In addition to giving his all to his family, he also continued serving his country as an Army Reservist for a total of twenty-nine years before he retired. He was very successful in his military career, working up to the ranking of Sergeant First Class. He received the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and Armed Forces Reserved Medal with “M” Device and 20 Years Device.

Garry was always a seeker of knowledge and education was very important. He graduated with his Associates Degree from ITT Technical Institute in the 1990’s. He also attended Sullivan University and graduated in 2015 with his Bachelors of Science Degree in Paralegal Studies.

Lovingly known as “Big G” and “Paw”, in his spare time Garry enjoyed anything that allowed him to spend time with his family. Fishing, family road trips, impromptu lunches and watching the University of Louisville Cardinals were some of his favorites, but nothing topped the time he spent watching his grandson, Jakobe, play football.

On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, Garry departed this temporary dwelling place to go be with God, in his permanent home. We celebrate the opportunity to give thanks to God for having a place prepared for our Garry, for now he has received his reward.

Garry was preceded in death by his father, Roland Halsel.

He leaves to celebrate his memory, his wife, Rochelle Halsel; daughters Garrika Peppers (Keith), RaShawnda Halsel, and Chelsie Nash; mother, Elsie Halsel; two sisters, Cheryl Parker and Jackie Halsel; one brother, Jeffery Halsel; four grandchildren, Jakobe Peppers, Zoelle Nash, Ian Nash and Omari Halsel; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 11am-1pm with a celebration of Garry's life beginning at 1pm.
