Frances Lorraine (Walter) Hess, 96, of Lanesville, Indiana, passed away October 9, 2022, at Providence Nursing Home, New Albany.
Frances will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to family and God, witty conversation, and uncanny ability to beat everyone at Euchre.
Most knew her as Fran, Fanny, or Meemaw. She worked hard, saved money, laughed easily, prayed the rosary, saved potpourri from the 1970s, blew a whistle to get everyone's attention when it was time to say grace before meals, and memorized family license plate numbers, just in case anyone went missing. She was a Lanesville icon who never missed the St. Mary's church picnic or Heritage Weekend. As family matriarch, she offered encouragement, love, and a helping hand as readily as her oatmeal butterscotch cookies.
Born in 1925 to Herman and Edith (Benson) Walter, she was part of the Lanesville Walter Family Dynasty. In 1947, she married Joseph Hess and, for decades, they owned and managed Hess Tire Company and Hess Texaco gas station. A lifelong and devoted member of Lanesville's St. Mary Catholic Church, she was active in parish events and leadership for nearly a century.
Survivors include a son, Ronald (Cindy) Hess of Sellersburg; grandchildren, Samantha (James) Cramer of Cleveland, Ohio, Joseph A. Hess and Grace Hess, both of Louisville; and great-grandchildren, Stella Lorraine and Clara Anne Cramer. Three of her 13 siblings survive: Roberta Garrett, John (Nancy) Walter, and Jude (Betty) Walter. She also leaves behind dozens of nieces and nephews who loved her greatly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Hess; and a daughter, Delores Ann (Lee) Morris. Siblings preceding her in death were brothers, Stephen, Nicholas, Patrick, and Irwin Walter and sisters, Patsy Walter, Mary Lou Bacon Trott, Rose Brown, Leola Braun, and Margaret Azenor Stilger.
