Fliss Burroughs, born August 12th, 1934, in Niagara Falls, New York, to the late Percy and Marion Clements, passed away in peace January 15th, 2023, to natural causes at the age of 88. She is survived by her son, Slade Larabee Burroughs, daughter-in-law Dana Lynn Burroughs and grandson Logan Slade Burroughs
Fliss was a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo with her B.S. in Elementary Education and went on to complete her Master of Religious Education degree at New York Theological Seminary. Her career started as Director of Christian Education for various churches in the New York city area. Upon relocating to Atlanta, GA and then moving on to Louisville, KY, she committed her life in work to the Presbyterian Church USA, starting in administrative assistant roles and completing her work as an Associate for Special Needs & Networking in the National Ministries Division.
Fliss loved to engage with small groups and volunteer her time where needed. From serving on the Alumni Board at New York Theological Seminary to her more recent service as an Elder of John Knox Presbyterian Church and as Councilwoman for the City of Plantation, KY.
Fliss cherished her close friends, as they cherished her. Meetings for church groups, book clubs or simply for lunch meant so much to her. She also loved quiet times with a good mystery to read, Elizabeth George and PD James being among her favored authors. When not reading or talking with friends she loved her legal procedural TV dramas.
Fliss will be remembered for her strong and willful spirit, close and meaningful friendships, academic achievement, and the level of organization she imparted on her life.
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth … put out my hand and touched the face of God."(From John Gillespie Magee's 1941 poem, "High Flight,")
