Eugene G. "Hoppy" Hopper, 88, of Memphis, Indiana passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at his residence. Hoppy was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the 36th Infantry. He retired from Old Louisville Cement (Now Essroc) in Speed, Indiana with over 39 years as an electrician. He was a member of the American Legion and the Memphis Christian Church.
He was born on July 16, 1922 in Prunlens, Kentucky to the late George Hubert Hopper, Sr., and Mamie (Marcum) Hopper. He is also preceded in death by his son, William Hopper; daughter-in-law, Donna Baisden; sisters, Betty Davis and Bernice Hopper; and brothers, George, Jr., Willard, and John B. Hopper.
Hoppy is survived by his wife, Christine (Meek) Hopper; daughters, Joyce Hutchinson and her husband, David and Peggy Barton and her husband, Jeff, all of Memphis; sons, Larrie Hopper and his wife, Diane of Columbus, Indiana, Randy Hopper and Betty McLain of Sellersburg, Indiana, and Robert Hopper of Louisville, Kentucky; sister, Jeanette Sapp of Plant City, Florida; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends from Essroc.
The Visititation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Newcomer Funeral Home (formerly Generations Funeral Home at 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Indiana). The Funeral Service will be at 11 AM on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Memphis Christian Church (13503 Memphis-Blue Lick Road, Memphis, IN 47143) with burial to follow at Bowery Cemetery in Memphis.
