Eugene Alan "Al" Charland was born November 15, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, son of the late Eugene and Patricia Charland. He died March 29, 2023 at his home in Pewee Valley, Kentucky surrounded by his loving family.
Growing up, Al and his family moved around the United States thirteen times in sixteen years. While attending Bowling Green State University, he met and later married the love of his life, Elaine (Oltmanns). He began his career as a high school art teacher in Elyria, Ohio. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Al and Elaine welcomed their two children, Jennifer and Alex, while living in Bay Village, Ohio. Following the completion of his military service, Al began his career in the coatings industry with American Cyanamid and moved his young family to Louisville, Kentucky. Later in his career he worked in sales for HyKlas Paints, Kelley Technical Coatings and Porter Paints.
A lifelong passionate gearhead, Al built and restored over a dozen cars, beginning with his grandfather's Model A Ford bequeathed to him as a child and which he later restored again with his son Alex. He also enjoyed riding his Harley, participated in many charity runs and held offices with the local Harley Davidson Chapter over the years. A talented artist and respected problem-solver, Al was at the ready for anyone that needed his help and could engineer anything he put his mind to doing.
