Esther Jane Book

Esther Jane Book, age 97 of Starlight, Indiana passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

She was born on February 21, 1926 in Floyds Knobs, Indiana to the late Clarence and Josephine (Toby) Wolfe. She worked at Woolworths in New Albany and later at Colgate Palmolive in Clarksville. Esther married Ambrose Book after he served in the Army during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart for his service. They raised six children on their small family farm.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose; son, Ricky Book (Ricky died at age 2); daughter-in-law, Rita (Goffinet) Book; sisters, Bertha Trindeitmar, Ruth Missi, and Dorothy Fischer; and brothers, Irvin Wolfe and Leo Wolfe.

Survivors include sons, Kenny Book (Beulah), Carl Book, and Donnie Book; daughters, Rose Mary Wright (Jerry) and Connie Throckmorton (Jeff); sister, Mary Rosenberger; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Esther was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Starlight. She enjoyed working at the Starlight Strawberry Festival each year, gardening, and baking.

The family would like to thank Rose Mary and Jerry Wright for their compassionate care. In addition, a very special appreciation to friends Sharon, Roana, and Carla for their loving assistance. Finally, thank you to the care provided by Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Her Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (8310 St. John Road, Floyds Knobs) with burial to follow at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (8310 St. John Road, Floyds Knobs, IN 47119).
