After high school, he went to work with U. S. Steel Homes. From there Elmer went to Peaselee & Gaulbert until he was drafted into the United States Army in April 1953.

While there, he worked inside and outside sales then became manager of the parts and service department. He went on a number of sales training trips to Chicago, Dayton, Ohio, and Italy. He toured Rome, Florence, Vatican City, Pompeii, and Naples. Elmer visited St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel, Prato, Statue of St. Peter's, which they called the Black Pope.
