Elizabeth Holder Schulz, beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 23, 2023. She was 94 years old. She has joined her beloved husband and life partner of 71 years, O.J., in God's loving embrace for eternal life.
Betty Holder was born and raised in Louisville, the only child of Elizabeth and Arthur Holder. During her school years, young Betty was responsible for much on the home front to help her parents who both worked full time in the family business. Following grade school at Holy Trinity, she attended Mercy Academy, and it was during high school that she began to date the love of her life, O.J. Schulz Jr. They would be married on January 3, 1951 and raise three children.
What an extraordinary gift she was to all who knew her! Betty was an incredible, selfless woman who always found ways to show how much she loved her family and friends. She was tireless in supporting her children as they discovered and pursued their own gifts and interests in life. She always treated everyone she met with kindness, compassion, and respect.
Betty truly cherished her lifelong friendships. She was a wonderful hostess and she and O.J. loved to entertain. In her young adult years she worked at the Courier Journal. As an empty nester, she enjoyed a return to the office at Bacon's Department Store. She was a community builder - always actively involved at church, with family and friends, and with neighbors. She was a wonderful writer. One of her favorite colors was red, and she especially loved to spot a cardinal as well as all the birds of Kentucky.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth Deckel Holder and Arthur Holder, and most recently her husband O.J. Schulz Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Schulz Oates, sons Barry Schulz (Judy Schulz) and Ted Schulz (Diane Schulz); grandchildren Sarah Oates, Meredith Schulz English, Victoria Oates Borchers, Ashley Arnold Scroggy, Justin Arnold, Sam Schulz, Shelby Schulz, and Sophie Schulz Connette; and nine great-grandchildren.
A private service is planned for the family, followed by an interment at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Mass of the Air or Dare to Care food bank.
