Duane Ray Freiberger, a cherished member of the Floyds Knobs community and a decorated veteran, passed away on October 21, 2024 at the age of 66. Born on March 25, 1958, in New Albany, Indiana, he was the son of Evans and Betty (Kerstiens) Freiberger. Duane dedicated 21 years of his life to serving in the United States Marine Corps, earning numerous accolades for his commitment and bravery.
A lifelong member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, Duane integrated his faith into every aspect of his life. His professional legacy includes a fulfilling career as a mechanic instructor at Prosser School of Technology, where he inspired countless students and was always rooting for the underdog. As a passionate member of the Marine Corps League, he continuously fostered camaraderie and service among fellow veterans.
Duane was known not only for his military service but also for his love of the outdoors. Above all, he was a devoted family man who cherished his time with loved ones. He was particularly fond of his grandchildren: Spencer Freiberger, Parker Whitaker, Rayden Freiberger, and Rayna Freiberger.
In addition to his parents, Duane was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Mary Jane; his children, Mary Lou Freiberger and Jeffrey Freiberger (Lisa); and his brother, Charles Freiberger (Patti). He also leaves behind many cousins and extended family members who will remember him for his warmth and generosity.
Cremation was chosen in accordance with Duane's wishes. Family and friends are invited to gather for a reception on Monday, November 11, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His funeral mass will be celebrated the following day at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (5719 St. Mary's Road, Floyds Knobs), with burial and military honors to follow in the church cemetery.
