Dr. Phillip Posey

Dr. John Phillip "Phil" Posey, 81, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away on August 12, 2017. Phil was the definition of a "southern gentleman" and a graduate of the University of Georgia. He was a passionate professor of History who taught at Southern Mississippi University and Virginia Tech and retired from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana. In the 1960's, Phil was a dedicated advocate for the civil rights movement in the south. He was an avid gardener and a member of Central Christian Church in New Albany.

Phil was born on December 4, 1935, to the late James Herbert and Marie (Holloman) Posey. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Dennis Posey.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon (Anshutz) Posey; daughters, Laurel Williamson (Mark) and Heather Timberlake (Larry); stepdaughter, Laura Lyons (Brian); stepson, Glenn Bridgewater (Jill); grandchildren, Molly Adewakum, Lucas Owen, Derek Hershman, and Alexis Gounaris; step-grandchildren, Brandon Lyons, Damon Lyons, and Kara Bridgewater; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces; and 2 nephews.

His Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 25, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at Central Christian Church (1315 East Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana). Cremation was chosen following Phil's wishes.
