Edward Merrill Campbell passed away on January 28, 2016 at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville, IN.
He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on December 10, 1930, the son of the late Thomas Grant and Pearl Miton Campbell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Claire Irene Campbell, his four children: Timothy Merrill Campbell (Laurie), Bonnie Lynn Campbell Moore (Dave), Jeffrey Alan Campbell (Kathy), and Julie Claire Campbell Isham, and his two sisters: Helen Campbell Huffstutler and Mary Campbell Akerly. His surviving grandchildren are Rebecah Miller, Jay Campbell, Ashley Louis, John-Michael Reitz, Katie Campbell, Kelly Campbell, Mercedes Isham, and Jesse Isham. He also has 5 great grandchildren.
Edward earned a dentistry degree from the University of Tennessee in 1955 and a Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina in 1962. He also joined the United States Coast Guard in 1955 and became a Colonel in the United States Public Health Service.
During his many years of service, he received numerous distinguished awards such as the USPHS Meritous Service Medal and the Carl A. Schlack Award presented by the American Association of Military Surgeons. Edward was also a Diplomate on the American Board of Dental Public Health in 1965 traveling all over the world in efforts to improve the dental health of millions.
Other honors include serving as President of the American Board of Dental Public Health in 1980, a consultant in the Regional Office of the World Health Organization in 1975, a Vice-Chairmen of the Public Health Section of the American Dental Association (ADA) in 1972, and President of the Southern Branch of the American Public Health Association (APHA) in 1968.
He was also a member of numerous executive commitees in the APHA, the AMA, the American Board of Dental Public Health, and the American Association of Public Health Dentists. Edward and his family finally settled in Prospect, KY where he worked at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in several positions, most notably as the Associate Dean in 1976, the Director of Auxillary Education in 1973, and the Coordinator of the Family Practice department until he retired.
Edward was a devout Baptist and an active member of Westport Baptist Church. He was also a charter member of the Hunting Creek Country Club. He loved spending time with his family and friends, being outdoors, working on his farm, golfing, and traveling. Although he was a brilliant man, he will be remembered most for his tremendous work ethic and lifetime of service to others. Edward had an infectious smile and a generous heart. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed."
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016 from 11:00am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00pm with burial to follow at Floydsburg Cemetery in Crestwood Kentucky.
