Dr. Carson Young Nolan, Ph.D, age 88 of Louisville, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born October 21, 1925, in Indianapolis, IN. He was a Veteran of the US Army Air Corp (USAAF) from 1943-1946. He received his BS/MA from University of Kentucky in 1950 and his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 1953. He served as Director of Education and Research and later President of the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville. He was an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville from 1962-1972. He was on the Council for Exceptional Children and the Association of Education for the Visually Handicapped. He was well-published in professional journals. He was a member of the Civil War Round Table and was an avid outdoorsman. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Bess Gravitt Nolan; his parents, Clarence H. and Bess Carson Nolan; and his sister, Marjorie Richardson.
Dr. Nolan is survived by his loving children, Dr. Thomas J. Nolan (Marjorie), Sarah E. Cunningham (Chuck), Jeffrey W. Nolan (Karen) and Christopher C. Nolan (Paula); grandchildren, LT. Mark Cunningham (Gabrielle), Elizabeth G. Walters (Jacob), Katherine L. Malone (Devin), Patrick C. Nolan and David J. Nolan; great-grandchildren, Josiah Daniel Walters and Sarah Grace Walters. He is also survived by a host of friends.
Visitation will be from 5-8pm Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive. Funeral services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Printing House for the Blind or the Salvation Army.
