Donald Gene (Christopher) Nugent, 91, of Louisville, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2022 after a stay at Creekside on Whipps Mill.
Don was born on December 3, 1930 to Clarence and Mabel McKinley Nugent in Louisville, Kentucky. After graduating from Saint Xavier in 1948, Don served in the United States Marine Corps from 1948 to 1949. He went on to earn a BA at Bellarmine College (1957), a Master of Arts at Creighton University (1959), a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa (1965), and a Master of Arts at the University of San Francisco (1982).
Don, who has been listed as a noteworthy history educator by Marquis Who's Who, had a gratifying career as a history professor specializing in the Renaissance Reformation Period. He served as a professor at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada (1961-1962), at Nazareth College in Louisville, Kentucky (1962-1963), at University of Nebraska, Lincoln (1964-1966), and at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, (1966-1995). He was a visiting instructor at University College Dublin (1972-1973) and was an adjunct professor at Lexington Theological Seminary. Over the course of his career Don wrote several books on theology.
In 1995, Don retired from the University of Kentucky and was named professor emeritus. As a devoted Catholic, Don spent his time writing religious treatises, visiting Gethsemane, participating in the Merton Society, and remaining involved in his church. Even though dementia began robbing Don of his lifetime of memories, it could not steal his joy at being in the house of the Lord.
Don was predeceased by his parents, his brother Clarence Nugent, Jr., and his sisters Mabel Nugent Vohl and Janice Nugent Washaleski. He is survived by his brothers John Randolph (Randy) Nugent and Allan Nugent and a host of nieces and nephews.
Don had an unwavering faith in God, which guided him throughout his life. His family will miss his presence in their lives but rejoice knowing he is at peace and resting as the good and faithful servant he was.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
