Donald Lee Mason, 75, died on November 28, 2023. Born in Louisville, KY, Don was the son of Maude and Richard Mason Jr, of southeastern KY. After graduating from Valley High School, he went on to obtain degrees in English, Education and Counseling/Administration. He was a true advocate of public education and lifelong learning. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Don served his professional career as a teacher, school counselor, assistant principal and administrator within JCPS for over thirty years. Don also had a love for the outdoors—fishing, hiking, and camping, and was especially fond of Bernheim Forest and Delaney Creek Park (Salem, IN). Don was a lifelong sports fanatic, and especially fond of the Louisville Cardinals and Major League Baseball (L.A. Dodgers). He was a member of First Baptist Church of Middletown, where he served as a Deacon for a number of years.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Maude and Richard Mason Jr; brother Richard Mason III; and grandsons Preston and Jayden Mason. Left to cherish his legacy are his wife of 49 years, Karen Mason; his children Julie Baker (Mark), Carla Judd (Kevin), and Dan Mason (Maria). He was most proud of his seven grandchildren, Zach, Weston, Caylen, Mia, Logan, Adalyn, and Alex. Don also leaves behind a large extended family including his nephew, Shane Mason (Dixie) and Shane's children, Avery and Melea.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday, December 1st, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Middletown (11721 Main Street, Middletown, KY). A service to celebrate Don's life will follow at noon at the church with burial at Louisville Memorial Gardens East.
