Devota June Welch, 89, of Louisville, formerly of Oklahoma City, died Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Forum at Brookside in Louisville, KY of natural causes. She was born in 1926 in Byars, OK, the daughter of Julius "Dick" and Jesse Dollar Rogers. She married Bill Welch on August 4, 1951 in Oklahoma City, they divorced in 1981.
June graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City in 1944. She studied in Mexico for a year as an exchange student and studied clarinet, piano, and string bass at Sherwood Conservatory of Music in Chicago and Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Oklahoma A&M, played string bass with the Oklahoma City Symphony for several seasons, and worked briefly as a secretary at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. She also attended Central State College in Edmond, OK and earned a Master's Degree in Spanish as well as Music Education. She taught Spanish and Music for 29 years in the Oklahoma City and Edmond public schools, retiring in 1996. In retirement, she worked for the Oklahoma City County Health Dept. as a Spanish interpreter for 13 years. She was also a private piano teacher most of her adult life.
Survivors include her son, Randy (Rebecca) Welch of Hudson, IA; daughter, Kimberly (Raleigh) Foster of Louisville, KY; four grandchildren, Shelly Welch of Orland, FL, Capt. Matthew Welch, USAF of Altus, OK; Shanay Hassmann and Gabriela Hassmann of Louisville, KY. June was preceded in death by her parents and Bill Welch.
Memorial service for June will be held at 11:00am Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the Forum at Brookside (201 Brookside Drive, Louisville, KY 40243). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (3703 Taylorsville Rd., Louisville, KY 40220).
