Della Scott Newman, age 92, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away Friday, September 29, 2023. She was renowned for her style, good humor, home cooking and support for her family, friends and community. Loved by all who knew her, her response was always: "Love you more." Even before today's contentious times, she taught her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that "you catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar." She was a member of Southeast Christian Church.
Della Newman attended Georgetown College, and later graduated proudly from Penn State, along with her eldest son. She worked as an Executive Assistant at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company in Louisville early in her career. She then married her beloved husband, the late Charles L Newman, then a University of Louisville professor, and became mother to three sons, grandmother of 10, great grandmother of 21, and a favorite aunt and great aunt. Born and raised on Swan Street in Louisville, she later lived in Anchorage, KY, spent time in Pennsylvania and Texas, and traveled the world, but always longed for Louisville when she was away.
Della Newman's grandfather, James C. "Pop" Thacker was a riverboat engineer, and worked on the Belle of Louisville. Her mother, Norine Thacker Roney, born in Burnside, KY, was a welder at Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company (JeffBoat) during World War 2, helping build amphibious landing craft. Her father, Freddy Scott hauled ice in the summer and coal in the winter. He worked for Stitzel-Weller Distillery in his golden years. When she was young, Della Newman helped her mother and step father, J.T. Roney, in the family grocery store in Okolona, and later with Roney Delivery Service.
Visitation will be from 1pm to 2pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky, with a celebration of Della's life to follow at 2pm.
