David M. Dugan

August 11, 1960 — June 15, 2022

David McMurray Dugan was born on August 11, 1960, and joined his older brother, Douglas Hill Dugan; younger sister, Patricia Margaret Dugan; and his father, David Dugan, in heaven on June 15, 2022. He left this earth too soon, but our Lord and Savior called him home and relieved him of all pain and suffering from a long and debilitating illness.

David was an unsung hero to his family, his church, and his community at large. He was humble and kind with a unique sense of humor, and sometimes he was the only one that understood his jokes. He leaves behind the love of his life and spouse of 41 years, Edna Katherine Dugan (Kathy); his two adult children, Patricia Dugan and Lori Ann Dugan; his precious and only granddaughter, Autumn; surviving sister Allison Millar; brother-in-law, Dennis Millar; sister-in-law, Deborah (Sedillo) Dugan (widow to his brother Douglas); his loving mother and widow Margaret (McMurray) Dugan; and many nieces, a nephew, and extended family members from Northern Ireland.

David was born in Arlington, Virginia, on August 11, 1960, and went to school at Lake Braddock Secondary School. His parents, David and Margaret Dugan moved from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and raised their young family in northern Virginia. As a young lad, David played baseball and soccer, but soccer was the family's sport. David married Kathy at a young age and started their family in Dale City, Virginia. They later moved to Florida for a brief time and later settled in Depauw, Indiana, where he could really spread his wings and enjoy the fresh air, country living, and the outdoors. He was passionate about fishing, hunting, and the Dallas Cowboys Football team. He would often call his brother on game day, just to challenge and wager a small bet. When he went bass fishing, he would welcome and take anyone to the lake who was willing to go, including his nieces, his nephew, and his granddaughter. In fact, he taught them all how to fish. And, yes, he had many fishing stories to tell and animal skins to skin. He was at his happy place on the lake or in the woods. His only grandchild, Autumn, remembers the many road trips looking for deer and singing silly songs. He had a gigantic heart and loved to sing and yodel. In fact, when one of his nieces had a part in a play that required yodeling, he called her up and gave her some quick tips on how to project and yodel correctly. She was a hit thanks to her uncle.

David was that guy that just showed up unexpectedly and was always there no matter what. In life, there are people who disappoint you during tragic times and people who step up. David was "that guy" who stepped up! He also loved to cook and would just make up recipes and would spend hours in the kitchen baking elaborate birthday cakes for his nieces and nephew.

He had a very fruitful career as a truck driver, delivering oil in order to make sure residents were warm during the winter. He clocked literally over hundreds of thousands of miles on the road. He later retired and was able to spend more time with family.

David was genuine. During his short time on earth, he touched many lives with his good nature, gigantic smile, and generous spirit. While Kathy was his first love of his life, his second was his precious granddaughter, Autumn. Both he and Kathy helped raise their granddaughter, and, oftentimes, you could see Autumn playing in their yard, happy as could be. On an annual basis during Christmas time, he would dress up as Santa Claus to play the role and bring cheer to area children. His boisterous HO, HO, HO would have children laughing gleefully and wanting for more.

David was well known in Depauw and throughout the county for his generous and giving attitude. He had an incredible garden full of vegetables that he would provide for those in need while also donating his time to Milltown Christian Church. Life is a journey, and David had many turns, roadblocks, and obstacles on the way, but he found God. One of his favorite t-shirts stated plainly, "Y'all Need Jesus." He studied and later became a deacon in his church, providing comfort and spiritual guidance to the congregation. David provided and served meals to those less fortunate, always making sure to spread his joy along with it.

It's difficult to measure one's life in a brief few words, but for David McMurray Dugan's life ... it's simple. He stepped up. He was an UNSUNG HERO, and he will be missed.

Services will be held at Milltown Christian Church, 214 E. Main Street NW, Milltown, Indiana, Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Immediately following the church service will be a reception. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Church Pantry under David McMurray Dugan's name.
