Danny Evans Atkinson

January 8, 1950 — June 8, 2021

Danny Evans ("Dan") Atkinson, 71, of Louisville, returned to his Heavenly Father on June 8th, 2021.

Dan was born in Madisonville, Kentucky on January 8th, 1950, to Wilbur and Edith Atkinson.

His Father, Wilbur, owned a plumbing company where Dan grew up learning all about the business and helping people in the community. Dan earned the title of Master Plumber by the age of 19.

He attended the University of Kentucky and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. During his studies, in a chemistry class, Dan met and fell in love with his best friend and wife, Karen Mann Atkinson. He remained devoted to her through the next five decades; creating a home full of love and laughter for their children and grandchildren. Generous with love and time, Dan (known as D to his children and Papa D to his grandchildren), was always there when you needed him. If you had a problem that needed to be fixed, Dan was who you called.

Dan started his own plumbing and HVAC business, Atkinson Service Company. He was much beloved by his customers for his honesty, integrity, and hard work. He retired from Johnson Controls as an HVAC engineer and also retired from the University of Louisville, where he was a physical plant technician.

After retirement, he enjoyed spending time helping friends and family with home improvement projects. He loved the water. Whether he was fishing or going for a boat ride, Dan was always happy when he was out there. Helping his grandchildren build fast and sharp looking Cub Scout Pinewood Derby cars each year also brought him a lot of joy. You could find him each year sitting in the front row watching the races with a smile.

Dan cherished moments with his grandchildren. To him his greatest life accomplishments were his 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and his 47 year marriage to Karen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Edith Atkinson.

Dan leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Karen Atkinson; children, Julie (Jeremy) Smith, Craig (Heather) Atkinson and Andrew Atkinson; grandchildren, Evan Smith, Landon Smith, Alyssa Smith, Brinley Atkinson, Carter Atkinson, Hollyn Atkinson, Olivia Atkinson, Elin Atkinson and James Atkinson; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; friends and cousins.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the support of Shelby, his caregiver, his home health care nurses for their excellent care, and 5 Star Transportation.

The family would like for memorial contributions be made to WHAS Crusade for Children, 520 W. Chestnut St., Louisville, KY 40202 or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023 or Mass of the Air, Maloney Center, 1200 South Shelby Street, Louisville, KY 40203-2600.

There will be a celebration of life for Dan in early June 2022.
