Conley Carl Marcum, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend left this world on October 16, 2024, in New Albany, Indiana, at the age of 84. Born on November 23, 1939, in London, Kentucky, Conley lived a life filled with dedication, love, and service to others.
A proud graduate of Hazel Green High School in 1957, He was proud to be inducted in the Laurel County Hall of Fame on September 12, 1998 for basketball, baseball, and track. Conley pursued further education at Union College, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He continued his education at Western Kentucky University by earning his master's degree. Conley also attended Indiana University earning his administration license. He devoted 39 years of his life to being a Guidance Counselor, Teacher, and Principle at the PRP, Ballard Memorial, Moores Hill, Eastern and Austin High School, where he positively impacted countless students with his wisdom and unwavering support. Conley's commitment to education and his role in shaping young minds exemplified his belief in the power of guidance and understanding.
Beyond his professional life, Conley had a deep passion for sports, particularly following UK basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball, and he found joy in playing softball and basketball. His adventurous spirit extended to fishing and hunting, where he cherished the peaceful moments spent outdoors. A man of many talents, he also enjoyed gardening and loved to sing in the church choir, sharing his gift with his community. Additionally he enjoyed keeping busy with other small businesses but especially loved selling uniform items at the post office.
Family was everything to Conley. He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Charlotte Marcum, who was his partner in every sense of the word. He is survived by his devoted sons: Anthony (Patty) Marcum, Tim (Kit) Marcum, Jeremy Marcum, and Brandon Marcum. Conley's legacy continues through his grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart: Kara (Dustin), Katy (Adam), Ryne (Chelsea), Tanner, and Tucker (Shannon), along with his cherished great-grandchildren, Cruz, Duke, Adrian, Kysn, and Rylnn. He shared countless memories with them, each moment a testament to the love that shaped their lives.
Conley was also fortunate to have a best friend, David (Diana) Bailey, whose companionship enriched his life. Additionally, he is survived by three nieces, three nephews, and many cousins, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Everitt and Mary Marcum, along with his brother, Bill Marcum, and sister, Peggy Hensley. Their memories will forever remain a part of Conley’s story-a story of kindness, strength, and dedication to family and friends.
The remembrance of Conley Carl Marcum will take place at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, in New Albany, where visitors will have the opportunity to pay their respects during a visitation on Monday, October 21, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 6:00 PM. The family invites all who knew and loved Conley to join in celebrating a life well-lived and to share in the memories he leaves behind. His spirit will continue to illuminate the lives of those he touched, reminding us all of the love he so freely gave.
